BBC iPlayer Now Available on XBOX 360

Up until now I have been watching the iPlayer on my iPad and PS3 but today I can rejoice as the main hub for entertainment in our house finally gets the ability to view it too.  Yes that’s right the BBC and Microsoft have finally agreed on the terms and conditions of the app and from today you can download it from the APPS section of your XBOX menu.

I’ve tested it and I have to say it’s a much better experience than on the PS3, which isn’t a dedicated app and rather a view of the website.  On the XBOX though it’s easy to navigate, slick and gives you the ability to use your Kinect.

As far as I know this is UK only but please leave a comment below if you can access this in other countries.

On Skyrim

When I’m not drooling over technology, I’m usually playing video games. I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember. In fact, my mother always tells this story about how the only way to get me to stop crying as an infant was to sit me on her lap and play the original Mario Bros. on the NES. She said I’d shut right up and watch her play for hours. My mom has since left the video game world, but I’ve stayed put. I play a wide genre of games, but as of late, I’ve been getting tired of the increasingly stereotypical shooter genre (particularly with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3). I’ve always preferred the Halo series, anyway. Moving away from a genre that’s main focus is multiplayer wasn’t a big deal to me for one reason: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released.

This rumor has been spreading like wild fire and it sounds like it is going to be true. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will feature a new service called Call Of Duty Elite.  Elite will allow customers to gain access too extra stat-tracking and downloadable map packs. The features of Elite are being described as just like the stock market. You can track players, individual performances in matches and specific weapon types being used.

Map packs will come  at no extra charge for those using the Elite service but for those who are not you will most likely pay the typical $10.00 for a new map pack. With that being said it is unknown how competitive the pricing of Call Of Duty Elite will be. Activision has not announced any prices yet regarding this new service.

I don’t think I’m the only person wondering how the customers are going to react to this extra charge. It would be really hard to start charging all the customers a new fee on top of there xbox live subscription fee. However Activision has said that the typical basic service will stay free. So for the users bothered by this whole idea you will still be able to get the typical features at no extra cost for now.

When I read about this it did not surprise me as Halo has offered a service just like this for a long time. I think it is an advancement to the Call Of Duty industry. I am not saying I am a fan of paying extra but I believe that get what you pay for and as long as something is free it can’t get any better because there is no funding. People are always saying they wish they would add new guns or more maps but people don’t realize that the $60 we pay for the game doesn’t go as far as they think. They have to pay the people who helped make the game possible and then on top of that they have to pay to maintain a network and servers. It isn’t cheap and it isn’t free so a monthly subscription fee will help add capital to Activision’s funds and this will allow them to add on more exciting content to our games.

I believe the pricing of this new service will be reasonable and not excessive as Activision has never done this and they really are testing out the waters with this subscription service. We will keep you updated as news comes in about pricing and features of Call Of Duty Elite.

In the upcoming game from Infantry Ward,  Modern Warfare 3, we are going to see some new game modes and revamped Spec Ops. The new game mode will be called survival mode. Survival mode will take place on multiplayer maps and it is Infantry Ward’s “Zombies”. In USA Today’s report they stated that you were able to trade in game currency from one person to another and build things such as turrets. The way survival mode will work will be the exact same as Zombies as you will have waves of bad guys coming at you. You will have attack dogs come after you along with exploding dogs and Kamikaze soldiers.

While speaking about the new survival mode Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s creative strategist said that, “You definitely have to change up your strategy as the enemy changes up. Obviously how you fight the kamakazi dudes is different from how you fight the normal dudes and how you fight a dog is different from a dude and how you fight juggernauts, they are not only big and armored, so they will just brute force come at you. But they each have their own way of being taken out effectively.”

Rockstar’s LA Noire was one of the most anticipated of the year. The game is set to a cop drama in the 1940′s. LA Noire is a new direction for Rockstar in the sense that normally you play a character against the law, and now you’re on the right side of it. However, it still retains a huge open world and great attention to detail as their other franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption also do. So does LA Noire live up to the benchmark for Rockstar Games?

The Netflix application on the Xbox 360 just received a new update that packs support for its popular Kinect Sensor. Simply start up your Xbox, launch the Netflix app and you’ll be prompted for a 43MB update. Using Kinect you can browse the entire catalog without any controller or remote. In addition to hand gestures, the app also packs support for voice control. You’ll also be able to view featured and recommended titles straight from the Kinect Hub.

It’s a very nice addition to the app and I really look forward to giving it a whirl and seeing its full capabilities. Whether or not it takes the place of my controller remains to be seen but either way it’s definitely the next step forward for the app and the Kinect.
