California Pacific designs has made the HAND Stylus, the world’s smallest retractable, rotating, and replaceable tip for the portable electronic devices (4mm).  The product was funded through Kickstarter and reached its initial funding goal in less than two days.  The product will be on Kickstarter  for another month.. The stylus has a hexagonal barrel design like the classic six-sided yellow pencil.  Now tablet owners can draw, sketch, take notes, and retouch photos more efficiently with most touch-screen tablets or phones.

Facebook Takes a Shot at iMessage

While checking my iPhone this morning I noticed that Facebook Messenger received a big update, which looks like it wants to become your default app for messaging.

Checking out the app update you can get a feel for what I mean:

  • Text friends for free over your data plan – One of the main reasons I use iMessage
  • Typing indicator – Functionality that iMessage currently does

The reason I see this as a really powerful update is that most of my friends and family are on Facebook but don’t have an iOS device, which makes iMessage unusable in those cases.  Also the younger generation of users are regularly ‘Facebooking’ each other rather than email, which seems a bit antiquated and sometimes from my experience these youngsters don’t even have an email address yet.

I’m going to start using it a bit more to test it out but these updates makes it use a bit more interesting.

Get your app updated now or download it for the first time here.

About.me Launches an iOS App

About.me has become one of my favorite social networking services and essential for anyone with an online presence.  Well yesterday it became even better with the launch of their very own iOS app.

If you aren’t familiar with about.me it’s essentially a place to put everything about “yourself.”  You can add a profile picture, a bio and all of your social links.  For me it’s replaced my website and now the only link that I need to send to anyone, think of it like my digital business card.

The iOS app allows you to manage your profile, search for people in the local area and search the larger directory for new people to follow.

Many of the writers here on Run Around Tech have About.me pages too.  Check out Mine, Zach’s and Larry’s.

Keep checking the site for our full review coming soon.  To download the About.me app head to the iTunes App Store page here.

Most of you know by now about the hoopla with SOPA, (Stop Online Piracy Act) also known as House Bill 3261. The purpose of this bill is to give U.S. law enforcement more control and give copyright holders the ability to fight online theft of intellectual  property and fake products. Doesn’t sound like something that would cause such a big debate right? Well, if you don’t already know the US government has a habit of tacking several, if not dozens of other “laws” onto bills in the hopes to entice other members of the House and Senate to vote for it.

Many other proposed actions could cripple what makes the internet a place to stay informed, do your job or protect yourself against other kinds of fraud. I could go on for days explaining all the things I think are wrong with the bill but I will save you the time and give a couple of the really good examples.

Yesterday we told you about a big update to the iOS app yap.TV.  The developers of SocialGuide want you to know about their app as well and we’re happy to oblige.  SocialGuide is first a web site which ranks TV programming in real time popularity based on social networking.  The website features a TV guide interface where programs appear, as they’re being televised along with a live Tweet ticker next to each where Tweets related to each show stream along.  If you’d rather just see what’s on TV you can opt to view a regular guide instead.

The mobile app, which is available for the iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices, allows you to interact with your friends while watching your favorite programming.  You can chat along with friends, shout out on Twitter or Facebook about what you’re watching and ask your friends to join you, read comments from the stars of the shows themselves and more.

SocialGuide is available as a free download via the links below.

Due in part to the rising crimes that seem to originate from encounters from social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace the NYPD has decided to add a new unit to focus on social networking.  The new unit will mine social media, looking for info about troublesome house parties, gang showdowns and other potential mayhem, sources said.  Here in Philadelphia, where I live, we’ve experienced issues with Flash Mobs.  One theory is that these mobs are using Facebook to coordinate.  A unit like the NYPD’s could go a long way to help combat them.  Same goes for what’s happening now in London.  Word is that many of the London rioters are using Twitter to post pictures of their mayhem and also coordinate meet-up plans.  Law enforcement officials there are trying to use those pictures to catch criminals.

The new unit, which will be headed up by Newly named Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor, will operate out of the city’s Community Affairs Bureau.

There’s no denying the tragic nature of the events taking place in London right now.  However, I’m not sure what to make of this web site which is calling upon the internet to identity those individuals who have taken part in looting during the riots.  I don’t know much about the site other than it asks you if you recognize individuals seen looting in photos.  If you do you can submit the person’s name, where they are from and a note.  I’m not however sure where that information goes – I’m assuming someone forwards it onto the authorities.   You can also choose to upload a photo of your own if you have one.

The Google+ application for iOS has just received another update.  This time the update brings support for the iPod touch and perhaps more importantly the iPad.  There’s still not support for iOS 5 – but keep in mind this is still technically a beta application so we shouldn’t expect everything.  I for one don’t find myself using Google+ much and notice that off all the people I have in my “circles” about 5% are actually using the new social networking service.  I know it’s not yet open to all so time will tell if it really takes off.  Making the app available on the iPad is certainly a step in the right direction though.

Update:  Although there’s still technically no iOS 5 support word is this version runs just fine on devices running the iOS 5 beta.

Just one tweet. That’s all it took.  A popular DJ known as Kaskade took to his twitter account to announce that there would be an accompanying block party after the premiere of a documentary about the Electric Daisy Carnival rave – an electronic music festival.  About 2,000 people were inside Grauman’s Chinese theater to catch the screening.  The problems began when the Los Angeles Fire Department inspector determined the theater was overcrowded and an unknown, perhaps even larger, crowd had begun packing the streets outside of the theater.  Police Officers ordered hundreds of people to disperse, but the crowd refused and began throwing objects.  Kaskade, who is featured in “Electric Daisy Carnival Experience” and has more than 90,000 followers on Twitter.  Later in the evening he went back to his Twitter account to try to calm the crowd.  ”Everybody CHILL OUT!!! The cops are freaking out. BE SAFE AND LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!” he wrote. The DJ was scheduled to appear at a party after the screening.
