On Skyrim
When I’m not drooling over technology, I’m usually playing video games. I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember. In fact, my mother always tells this story about how the only way to get me to stop crying as an infant was to sit me on her lap and play the original Mario Bros. on the NES. She said I’d shut right up and watch her play for hours. My mom has since left the video game world, but I’ve stayed put. I play a wide genre of games, but as of late, I’ve been getting tired of the increasingly stereotypical shooter genre (particularly with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3). I’ve always preferred the Halo series, anyway. Moving away from a genre that’s main focus is multiplayer wasn’t a big deal to me for one reason: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released.
Review: Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta

Oh, Naughty Dog, you’ve done it again. First you got me with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Then you upped the ante with Uncharted: Among Thieves. And this fall you’re set to do it all over again with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. These third-person adventure games are among my favorite games of this console generation, if not my favorite games of all time. This is one of those rare series where I’m more impressed by the story then anything else. But, that “anything else” is still phenomenal – graphics, controls, audio. The production value on these titles is top-notch. As soon as the credits rolled on the second installment of Uncharted, I was itching to continue my adventures in Uncharted 3. But alas, I’ll have to wait until early November to jump back into the shoes of Nathan Drake. Luckily, Naughty Dog has dropped the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta into my lap, if only for a few weeks. Read on for my impressions.
How To: Upgrade Your PS3 Hard Drive

When I was finally able to get my hands on a shiny, new Playstation 3 four or five years ago, I went all out and got the top-end 60GB version. 60GB on a game console?! That’ll last me forever! Yea, right. I’ve filled that hard drive up 10x over and managing the free space was becoming a real pain. So, I finally decided to upgrade the internal hard drive. Granted, I could use any combination of USB flash drives, external hard drives, etc., but I didn’t want to clutter up my shelves with more gear. Plus, the cost of internal hard drives has dropped through the floor over the past couple of years. I’m happy to report this was one of the easiest “do it yourself” tech upgrades I’ve ever tackled.

New Game Modes and Revamped Special Ops In Modern Warfare 3 (Zombies?)
In the upcoming game from Infantry Ward, Modern Warfare 3, we are going to see some new game modes and revamped Spec Ops. The new game mode will be called survival mode. Survival mode will take place on multiplayer maps and it is Infantry Ward’s “Zombies”. In USA Today’s report they stated that you were able to trade in game currency from one person to another and build things such as turrets. The way survival mode will work will be the exact same as Zombies as you will have waves of bad guys coming at you. You will have attack dogs come after you along with exploding dogs and Kamikaze soldiers.
While speaking about the new survival mode Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s creative strategist said that, “You definitely have to change up your strategy as the enemy changes up. Obviously how you fight the kamakazi dudes is different from how you fight the normal dudes and how you fight a dog is different from a dude and how you fight juggernauts, they are not only big and armored, so they will just brute force come at you. But they each have their own way of being taken out effectively.”
Review: LA Noire for PS3 & Xbox 360
Rockstar’s LA Noire was one of the most anticipated of the year. The game is set to a cop drama in the 1940′s. LA Noire is a new direction for Rockstar in the sense that normally you play a character against the law, and now you’re on the right side of it. However, it still retains a huge open world and great attention to detail as their other franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption also do. So does LA Noire live up to the benchmark for Rockstar Games?

Sony Compensating PSN Users for Outage
If you haven’t been keeping up with the gaming world lately on April 17th, (according to sony), their Playstation Network service was hacked into and taken offline. Sony was forced to completely rebuild the online infrastructure and on May 1st, in Japan Sony held a press conference regarding the issue and what the situation was. They mentioned that once the service goes back online there will be a massive update and users will be required to change their password to login. One more thing they mentioned is that they’d be compensating all 70 million users for the outage and here’s what they are offering
- Some sort of free content download depending on region
- 30 days free Playstation Plus subscription (30 days added to those with an existing subscription)
- 30 days to Qriocity music service
This is definitely a step that should be taken and it’s nice to see Sony compensating. There is a problem I feel though, and that is the PSN+ service. The deal is that any games you get for free while in the program will expire if you cancel the subscription and since most users including myself don’t plan on continuing it’s really just a marketing plan.
Sony Takes a Shot at Used Game Sales

Not to be outdone by EA’s “Online Pass” system, Sony has unveiled the upcoming version of their flagship shooter, SOCOM 4, will include similar online functionality. Each new copy of the game will include a code to unlock “SOCOM Pro” – allowing you to play online with other “pro” users, download special DLC and more. However, this is a one-time use code that is tied to your PSN id. So, if you pick-up this game used, you’re out of luck. Of course, Sony is making it very easy to purchase a brand new code for the low, low price of $14.99 (on top of what you’re already paying for the game).
I really hope this isn’t the future for online gaming. I feel like Sony, Microsoft, and EA are slowly nickel-and-diming me over and over again. Sixty dollars for a game is pretty steep already, not to mention online service fees (ie. Xbox Live, Playstation Plus). And now, “online passes” that I need to have to play using online services that I’ve already paid for. Yeesh. Enough already.
Review: Dual Triggers for PS3

There’s a reason Sony’s Playstation controllers have remained virtually unchanged since the original PS One debuted in 1994. Sure, they’ve added things like force feedback and Bluetooth wireless capabilities, but the form factor, button placement and analog sticks are pretty much the same as they were over a decade ago. So how do you improve upon something that’s been proven to be a market leader? Keep reading to find out.
