Cheated by Verizon Again?

Oh Verizon FIOS, you make it hard to love you. Remember last week when I shared my disappointment over Verizon wanting to charge me to upgrade my router? This morning I heard a beeping coming from my basement. Upon investigating I came to the conclusion that the battery backup for my FIOS system had expired. A “replace battery” light was illuminated on the control box.  A quick 40 minute phone call to Verizon support confirmed this. I was told that if I wanted to replace the battery it would cost me $28 plus shipping. I asked the representative who owned the equipment in my basement and he answered Verizon. When I inquired as to why I had to replace a battery in equipment I didn’t own I did not get much a response other than $28 plus shipping or I was free to find a similar battery elsewhere and replace it myself.

I can’t help but feel cheated.  For all the money I pay Verizon for all four of it’s services (home phone, TV, internet, wireless) should I really have to fork over $28 for a battery in equipment that isn’t mine yet I pay to run?

I love Verizon FIOS for it’s speed but boy does the company not make it easy.

I can’t begin to explain how frustrating it is trying to transfer data amongst various devices. I’m always on the lookout for convenient solutions for passing music, videos, and documents along to my gadgets.

AViiQ announced the release of their latest product, the Ready Clips. Ready Clips is a small band with a USB transfer tip on each side. One side will feature a USB 2.0, and the other will be available in the following options: microUSB, miniUSB, and Apple dock connector. On the top of the Ready Clips is also a clip which allows you to strap it onto you bag or pocket.

Ready Clips not only allows you to easily transfer data between your computer and device, but also charge them. The overall design looks to be quite impressive, with it’s really slim profile and appearance. The band is bendable making it easier to use and store in tight areas. The Ready Clips are available now in various individual and combo sets ranging from $19.99 to $29.99.

For more information on the Ready Clips, you can visit AViiQ’s website here.

Review: Native Union Curve Twin MM02T

DSC 0003

Native Union has long been in the forefront of companies making products which are meant to make talking on our mobile phones easier.  With the ever growing trend of more and more people ditching their landline phones and going 100% mobile this is something that’s needed more and more every day.  With the popularity of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 and FaceTime, users are also looking for a more ergonomic way to video conference via their Apple devices.  Ever tried to sit there holding your iPhone 4 up for an hour long FaceTime session?  Can you say pain in the elbow?  Add in Skype, Line2 and a host of other phone like services available for the iOS platform and it’s easy to see why making your iPhone or iPad your “main” phone just makes sense and the need to make using them comfortable as well.

At CES 2012 we had a chance to preview some of Native Union’s newest offerings.  The Curve Twin MM02T was shown as a device meant to become the central resting place for more than one of your connected devices.  The iPhone and iPad for example.  Or your computer and iPad, computer and iPhone etc.  Many of us have more than one mobile device and by releasing the Curve Twin Native Union has offered a way for us to make sure every device we own stays not only connected but stays in an ergonomic position keeping us comfortable while using them.

Want to hear more?  How does the Curve Twin work?  Read on for my full review.

DSC 0001

For the past three months I’ve relied on my 11″ MacBook Air as my “main” computer.  This presents many challenges, two of the more difficult of which are, a rather small hard drive, at 128GB and only two USB ports.  I’m also a member of a family of five, each with their own iOS devices and we share many other computers in the house.  A networked hard drive (or NAS) always peeked my interest and I knew it probably offered the best solution for someone in my situation.  Not only for it’s ability to allow multiple users to access the files stored on it also because it didn’t have to be plugged directly into any one single computer.

The Western Digital My Book Live Duo is actually two hard drives in one, combining your choice of either 2 2TB drives or 2 3TB drives inside one housing.  After it’s plugged into your home router it becomes the central storage location for your files and your backups allowing you to set up the drive as either one gigantic hard drive or one drive that copies it’s contents onto another.  If you’ve ever lost data in a hard drive failure, and I have, you’ll immediately recognize the importance of the later configuration.

Combine all this with iOS app support as well as a web based tool for accessing your files when you’re away from home and the Western Digital My Book Live seems like a winner?

Was it?  Read on for my full review and find out.

I’ve been a loyal Verizon customer for over 7 years.  When we moved into our current home we had the choice of providers for our internet, television and phone service.  We choose “big-red” for all three.  At that time Verizon gave us a modem to use with their FIOS internet and we also chose a DVR for our family room.  Recently I’ve been having issues with both.  I called Verizon hoping for an easy fix for both my issues.  What I got was far from it.

Read on for more.

Video Review: ElementCase Vapor Dock

We had a chance to preview the ElementCase Vapor Dock back at CES this past January.  Just like every other ElementCase product we’ve sampled we were super impressed.  Fast forward to today and the prototype Vapor Dock has turned into reality and product has begun.  This heavy duty, aluminum dock uses Element’s next satin Flux finish and is offered in two colors, black or silver.  It comes complete with an integrated 30-pin connector cable so you’ll be able to hook it right into one of your computer’s USB ports but it can also be used in a wall outlet with the addition of an adapter.

Click on through to check out my review of the ElementCase Vapor Dock.  Then head to this page on the company’s web site to learn more about it.

A few weeks ago while I was at CES 2012, a product caught my eye, that wasn’t iPhone related.  There was a booth with small hand sized sports cars with L.E.D. lights, so I wondered over and to my surprise, they were actually optical computer car mice.  I began asking the person behind the booth a few questions and by the time I arrived home I had been mailed a few samples.  These mice are officially licensed from the big name manufacturers like Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz and Ford just to name a few.  The cars are extremely detailed from the rims and tires to the hood scoops and grills.  They are very aesthetically pleasing but it doesn’t stop there.

Head on in after the break to read more.
