Waterfield Designs has a reputation for making top-notch products. Often made with genuine leather and nylon, the San Francisco-based company prides itself on making each product made-to-order. The Finn is Waterfield Designs’s take on the modern wallet. Read on to find out about how I fell in love with this little leather gem.

The Finn is unique in that it’s a unisex offering. Almost every wallet that you see on the market is clearly gender-defined. Such is not the case with the Finn. Instead, the Finn is a gender neutral wallet that comes in two different sizes: one large enough for cards/cash only, and one aimed at fitting your iPhone in comfortably.

The Finn is constructed of leather and nylon. Waterfield Designs offers six different colors of leather, ranging from neutral brown to red. I was sent the Grey Leather (size 25) and Camel Leather (size 27) Finn, and they both look great. One of my favorite things about the leather on the Finn is its ability to wear elegantly. After use, you’re presented with an aged leather wallet, and one that looks incredibly attractive.

The Finn features a zipper enclosure with a locking mechanism to ensure that it doesn’t come open. The zipper, as a whole, is one of my favorite features of the Finn. I reviewed the Cityslicker for iPad mini case, and was impressed with the implementation of the zipper. I’m happy to say every bit of quality is apparent on the Finn as well. The zipper is easy to open, never catches, and the locking mechanism is really cool.

The Finn features two side pockets and a main compartment in the middle. Waterfield Designs claims that the size 25 Finn can hold 20+ cards, while the size 27 Finn can hold 15+ cards, plus your iPhone. That’s a pretty incredible feat for something so compact. I use the size 25 Finn as my daily driver, and I can attest to the pleasantly surprising thinness of the wallet, even with cards in it. The Finn is significantly smaller than any wallet I’ve ever owned, even with all of my various cards in it.

The size 27 fits the iPhone 5 perfectly, while still allowing a ton of cards to be stored inside. Of course, the size 27 is bigger due to the phone being inside, but it’s still surprisingly compact. My girlfriend is in love with the size 27, as she likes the idea of storing her phone somewhere besides her pocket. She guesses that the size 27 will be the perfect Disneyland companion for our trip this fall: a singular wallet that can hold her Fast Pass, Disney credit card, and iPhone 5. I suspect she’s right.

The Finn is, to me, the perfect iteration of a wallet: attractive, compact, and leather. The zipper is a brilliant addition, especially with the locking mechanism. The surprising thing about the Finn is that it’s only $29 for each size. This makes the Finn the perfect choice for just about everyone, in my opinion. I simply cannot recommend the elegance and functionality of the Finn enough. Check it out on Waterfield Designs’s website.

Over the past few weeks we’ve taken a look at some of the newest case offerings from Uniq Case.  First we checked out the Porte case, then the Back to Basics.  While those cases were cool they fail to show one of the “unique” (pun intended) things Uniq Case does as a company when to comes to their case lineup.  The Scribe Case, which we’ll take a look at today, showcases the company’s philosophy of looking at the mobile phone case a not just a thing you put on your phone to protect it but rather as a stylized element.

Each of these cases feature a fabric feeling external material that has a nice amount of grip.  You get even more grip thanks to the bit of soft touch material from the snap on case that extends out to the edge on the back.

The “case” portion of the Scribe is a simple snap on the back style shell that coated in a soft touch material.  Installation is as easy as placing your device into the case, with the button side first, and then clicking the opposite into place.

Each of the cases offers full access to their respective device’s ports and controls thanks to well placed and amply sized cutouts.

For video watching or other tasks when you’d rather have your phone or iPad at a more upright angle the Scribe case allows you prop up your device at a nice angle.  The microfiber line interior of the front flap prevents any sort of slippage of your device when in this mode.

I have this grandiose idea that life is an adventure and I’m an adventurer. I realize that this is often a silly way to look at something as complicated as life, but I think it keeps me positive and open to exploration. But sometimes, I try and embark on actual adventures. You know, the ones that require less human interaction and provide chances to look at the beauty around you. However, I’m still aware of my need and desire to keep my phone around during these adventures, solely because the iPhone 5 is my main camera. I had always been hesitant to take my iPhone on my adventures with just a normal case on, however. The iPhone 5 doesn’t exactly age well, in regards to scuffing. And heaven forbid if you drop it on a hike. However, thanks to the Lifeproof fre for iPhone 5, I can rest easy bringing my iPhone along for each adventure I embark on. Read on.

The Lifeproof fre is a completely encapsulated iPhone case that protects your iPhone from the elements, including dust and water, and has great shock absorption during drops.

The folks at Lifeproof strongly suggest that you test your Lifeproof case’s waterproofing before you embark on an underwater photography journey. They suggest that you assemble the case, place it at the bottom of the sink weighed down by a bowl, and leave it there for an hour. Only after inspection should you put your phone in. I did this, and my case was bone dry on the inside. A good start.

Assembling the case is easy enough, considering it completely encompasses the iPhone. Separating the case requires a little bit of elbow grease and a dime or penny. While this may seem like a pain to some, you need the case to be hard to open. It seals itself when you close it.

Put your phone face down in the front part of the fre after cleaning both the front of your iPhone and the inside of the fre’s screen protector. Assembling the case is easy: simply snap on the back, but make sure to hit every single point of contact to ensure that the fre is completely closed. Flip close the Lightning port cover and screw in the headphone jack plug, and you’re good to go.

The fre is surprisingly thin, considering that this is an element resistant case. It will feel bigger than a lot of cases you may use, but not woefully big. For example, it’s not as bulky as Otterbox’s Defender (which is something that will likely change, considering Otterbox just completed its purchase of Lifeproof).

Using the fre with your iPhone 5 is awesome, solely because of the fact that you can almost completely disregard any fear you have of damaging your phone. Unless you lose it (and don’t have the Find My iPhone app installed), your phone is safe from almost anything. I’ve shot photos underwater, used it during work around my girlfriend’s ranch, and even showered with it to listen to music (TMI, I know). In all cases, the fre protected my iPhone 5 an unprecedented amount compared to any case I’ve used.

It’s not all roses with the fre, though. There are tradeoffs that have to be considered when using a case like this. And while they’re certainly annoying, it’s important to realize that they are necessary annoyances to provide this level of protection. First of all, I’m not a fan of Lifeproof’s implementation of a built-in screen shield. The screen shield doesn’t fit snug to the screen, and can often lead to typing errors during use. Moreover, the screen shield leaves traces of “oil marking” on places that it does contact the screen. In general, you’re not going to get to see the Retina display in all of its glory when using the fre. Furthermore, and less annoying, is the need for a headphone adapter. Lifeproof includes this with your case, so it’s no big deal, but you have to screw in a 3.5 mm headphone jack with an O-ring to use headphones with the case. Again, this is a completely necessary annoyance, and I’m glad Lifeproof has thought through a solution.

All in all, I see the Lifeproof fre as a situational case. I will be using the fre on every single adventure life takes me on. But I’ll be taking it off immediately when I get home. I think this is what Lifeproof expects as well. The fre is attractive and well-designed, so it is completely possible to use it full-time, but my bet is that you won’t want to do so. Besides, you shouldn’t be doing much more than taking photos with your phone on adventures anyway, so the screen shield and headphone jack adapter annoyances are easy to swallow for me. Take a load off with the Cellairis Talo case. This case protects your iPhone 5 and does all the work for you. The inner silicone skin is designed specifically to absorb shocks to your phone from drops. The inside layer is carefully cut to give your iPhone 5 the perfect hold in your hands, while the outer hard shell provides the ultimate protection- saving your phone from harsh scratches and abrasions.

Inside the packaging you basically just get the case itself, which includes 2 layers and a belt clip holster.

The case is easy to put on, first is the tough silicone then the hard backing and if need be you can also add the belt clip.

On the left side you have your ringer switch that is opened but is on the deep side and I even had issues using it and I have small fingers, the volume buttons have a nice feedback.

The bottom is similar to the volume cut out, you have cut outs for your speakers, dock and headphone port but they are really deep.

On the top the on/off switch is covered and has a great response feedback when pushed.

The Cellaris Talo case is nice looking, has great protection to it but I think needs a bit of work.  The ringer switch is too deep and same goes for the bottom cut outs; but other than that the case feels good in the hands and with possibly a bit of work with those cut out issues Cellairis woud have a great case on there hands. The outside of the case is made from a combination of poly carbonate and TPU. Five screws accent the design  with the Urban Armor Gear logo placed in the center of the case.

The inside of the case is lined with a soft, rubber, cushy TPU material. It cradles your iPhone 5 such a fashion that you do not feel any damage could be causes to it. Almost like a soft pillow.

To install the case on your phone you simply start with the button side of your iPhone 5 and then pop the remaining portion into the case. It’s a bit of a tight fit, which is a good thing. That means your phone will not come out of the case unexpectedly.

Once your phone is installed in the case you will still have access to all of the phones ports and controls. Starting on the bottom of the case you’ll find three individual cutouts. One for the headset jack and speaker, one for the Lightning port, and a third for the microphone.

Along the left side of the case you’ll find the volume buttons replaced with TPU coated buttons from the case. These are big oversize which makes it very easy to find them. The cut out for the mute switch is wide and accessible.

Along the top you’ll notice that the sleep wake button is also replaced with a TPU coated button from the case. This too is oversized which means finding it quite easy. It also gives a great amount of tactile feedback when you press it.

This case offers plenty of lay on the table protection thanks to a lip which comes up over the glass of the iPhone 5. This means should you choose to place your iPhone 5 down on a flat surface with the screen side first, the rubberized lip of the case will make contact with the table first, before your screen does.

The cut out on the back of the case for the iPhone 5′s rear facing camera and LED flash is wide and does not interfere with the flash it any way.

In short I’m a big fan of the Urban Armor Gear iPhone 5 case. The case features a very unique design, comes in multiple colors, and even includes a screen shield. If you’re someone that requires a decent amount of protection for your iPhone 5 but don’t feel like bulking it up with a super duper heavy protective case, this might be a good choice for you. The Urban Armor Gear  iPhone 5 case feels very protective yet slim at the same time.

One of the things I’ve grown to love about the iPhone case market is its size. There are cases for just about every consumer, regardless of your taste. Carved Cases is looking to fulfill one of those niches. Carved cases are made with a wooden insert on the back, and offer tons of choices to choose from. Read on to find out how they stand up.

Carved makes two products, wooden skins and wooden cases. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a couple to try out: the Anchor and the Galleon.

The top and bottom of the case features an open design that allows easy access to the sleep/wake button, the Lightning port, and the 3.5mm headphone jack. I’ve always been a fan of these kinds of designs, as it allows for the use of third-party accessories.

The side of the case features cutouts for both the volume up/down buttons, and the ringer/silent switch. Carved has met a sweet spot with the depth of the cutouts on their cases, as it’s quite easy to access the button and switches.

The case that encompasses the phone itself is made of clear plastic and fits well enough. I did notice that the phone shifts ever-so-slightly in both of the cases I received, which makes me believe that one of two things are true: Carved’s dimensions are a tiny bit off (I’m talking less than a millimeter), or the cases I received were slightly defective. It’s worth noting, however, that the shift is minuscule, and I don’t believe it’ll scratch your phone.

The back of the case is where Carved’s products succeed greatly. Both the Anchor and the Galleon have beautiful, detailed designs carved into them. The Galleon is particularly impressive, as a lot of detail was required for this particular design, and Carved nailed it. The Anchor one is equally as beautiful, though not as detailed. What’s more is that Carved can laser-etch any design or logo you have onto either a wooden skin or case. Carved’s wood selection process also must be great, as both the Anchor and the Galleon case possessed beautifully-grained wood. For what it’s worth, the wood smells fantastic, too.

Carved has a good product on their hands. I’m a huge fan of the designs, along with the huge selection they have (check out the World Map and the Random Puzzle as a couple of my other favorites). Although my phone didn’t quite fit in both cases, it didn’t affect performance or protection in any way, and was hardly noticeable. Both the Anchor and the Galleon can be picked up from Carved’s website for $29.

Having reviewed several of M-Edge’s cases over the past few years I’ve enjoyed watching them grow as a company.  Beginning with only a few covers for e-readers, they’ve blossomed into a recognizable brand name in a crowded mobile device case market.  I had a chance to see some of the folks from M-Edge while at CTIA this past May and previewed some of their new offerings while at the show.

The new Slim Case for the iPad 2, 3 or 4, is a lightweight, sleek case which utilizes the company’s “GripTrack” technology.  This allows you to prop up your iPad into a ton of stand angles for both consuming as well as creating media on your Apple tablet.

Inside the packaging you’ll find just the case.  No other items come along with it.  This should’t be a surprise.  There are very few iPad cases these days which come with extras such as a screen shield.

The Slim case is available in two colors.  You can choose from Carbon Fiber (like I was sent for review) or Purple.  The case has a small amount of M-Edge branding on both the front and back, but since it’s embossed on it’s not that noticeable and didn’t bother me much.

The exterior of the Slim Case is made from what M-Edge calls Microfiber leather.  The carbon fiber pattern has a nice texture too it, which adds a good amount of grip.  The corners of the case feature a bit of soft touch material for even more.

The inside of the case is composed of two different materials.  On the left, you’ll find that the front flap has been lined entirely with a soft microfiber material.  This will safeguard your iPad’s screen when the flap is closed.  On the right, a snap on the back style shell awaits your iPad.  This entire area is coated in soft touch material.  There’s nothing that might cause a scratch to the back of your iPad.

You place your iPad into the Slim Case but starting with the button side of your iPad first and then clicking the opposite in.  The fit is tight but not so tight that you feel your damaging your iPad.  It’s also not difficult to remove the iPad from the case.  Just pop it out from the corners and the iPad is safely and easily removed.

Once installed the Slim Case yields full access to all of the iPad’s ports and controls.  Along the bottom you’ll find two cutouts, one for the charge/sync port and another for the iPad speakers.  This case works with the iPad 2, 3 and 4.  While the cutout for the charge/sync port is large, meant for the iPad 2 or 3 30-pin connector, it works just fine with the iPad 4′s Lighting port.

On the right side of the case a single long cutout allows for acces to the iPad’s volume rocker and mute/orientation switch.  These are completely accessible, even with the case closed.

At the top of the case three more cutouts expose the sleep/awake button, microphone and headset jack.  The headset jack cutout is large enough that I can not imagine having trouble with any headphones fitting.

On the back of the case  a round cutout, that’s perfectly sized, makes sure the iPad’s rear facing camera remains free and clear for when it comes time to snap some pictures or take some video.

Along the inside of the front flap of the case M-Edge has placed tons of little grooves.  They refer to these as “GripTrack technology” and it allows for an almost infinite number of landscape stand angles.  The stand angles are sturdy and I experienced no slipping of the iPad while in stand mode.  Basically, choose a stand angle and the iPad will stay there until you move it.

Unfortunately this case does not work with the iPad’s built in sleep/awake feature so that when you close the front cover the iPad does not go to sleep and when you open it the iPad does not wakes up.  Frankly I can’t understand why any iPad case manufacturer would make a case without including this feature.

During transport you can secure the Slim Case closed with a elastic strap located inside the front flap of the case.  This keeps the case nice and compact and prevents the front flap from opening up and flapping around when you don’t want it to.

My initial impressions of the Slim Case were, Wow!  I like it a lot.  Right up until the moment I discovered it does not work with the iPad’s built in sleep/awake feature.  If you’ve watched or read any of my iPad case reviews you know there are two absolute requirements I have when considering the  use of an a case.  First, the case has to stand up.  The M-Edge does this, and then some.  The GripTrack technology allows you to prop up your iPad in a ton of different angles, from a relaxed typing angle to a more steep video viewing position. My second iPad case requirement is what discounts me from using this case, the aforementioned lack of sleep/awake functionality.  If this isn’t a concern for you and you are looking for a super sleek and very functional case for your iPad 2, 3 or 4 you should totally check out the M-Edge Slim Case.  It’s lightweight, slim and compact, fits the iPad perfectly and the multiple stand angles are a welcomed addition.

The Back to Basics Cases comes in four different colors.  You can choose from White, Black, Pink or Red.

The outside of the case is made from a glossy poly-carbonate.  It’s totally clear so that your Galaxy S4 can be seen.  The edge of the case has a colored TPU boarder.  This not only adds a style element but a nice amount of grip as well.

The inside of the case is pure poly-carbonate.  I do not foresee any issues with the case scratching the back of the S4.

To put the case on simply pick a corner and snap the phone in.  It’s a tight fit, which is a good thing.  There’s no chance of your S4 coming out the case unless you want to remove it.

Once installed on your phone the case yields full access to all of the S4′s ports and controls.  Along the bottom of the case you’ll find two cutouts, one for the Mico USB port and another for the microphone.

On the left side of the case the rubberized TPU lip covers the built in volume rocker.  This gets replaced by a volume rocker from the same material.

On the right side of the case same holds true for the power button.

At the top of the case you’ll find more cutouts for the headset jack and secondary microphone.

On the back of the case a nice wide cutout allows the rear camera and flash to remain obstructed.  There’s also a cutout for the phone’s speaker as well.

This case features a nice amount of “lay on the table” protection.  The colored TPU lip sticks up above the glass screen of the phone.  This way if you place your phone onto a flat surface with the screen side first the lip of the case will make contact with the surface first instead of your phone’s screen.
