Review: stm marquee Case for iPad mini

I’ve long been a fan of stm bags.  The company appeals to me because of their centralized approach to product development.  That is, they don’t make a ton of stuff.  But the select items they do make, they make very well.  Case (pun intended) in point, the stm iPad mini case line up.  The product line only consists of 4 cases.   Today we’ll take a look at the marquee, which is at the top of the list when it comes to stm’s iPad mini case selection.

The marquee case is available in four different colors.  You can choose from pink, white black or blue.

The marquee is crafted from genuine leather and this is quite evident from the moment you open the packaging as you’re greeted with the pleasant aroma of real leather.  The front and back of the case feature a smooth soft texture.  A small card included with the case offers advice on how to care for the genuine leather.

The interior of the case is lined with soft micro fiber to protect the iPad mini once inside.

The case uses a snap in mechanism to secure the iPad mini in place.  Once you click your mini inside it feels very secure.  I never felt as though the mini might pop out unexpectedly.

Once installed the case does yield access to all of the mini’s ports and controls.  Along the bottom you’ll find one long cutout for access to the lightning port and speakers.  On the side there’s also another single cutout for accessing the volume up and down buttons as well as the mute/orientation switch. On the top of the case you’ll notice three notches.  One for the sleep/awake button, another for the mini’s microphone and a third for the headset jack port.

On the back of the case a round cutout allows the rear facing camera to remain unobstructed.

A magnetic flap on the back of the marquee allows you to prop up you mini into one of two different stand angles.  There’s also a handy stylus loop attached to the flap.  If you’re a stylus user you can store your stylus in the loop to help keep tabs on it.

Upright for watching videos.  I did feel like this particular angle was a bit on the unsteady side.

Or relaxed for typing.

The marquee case does work perfectly with the iPad mini’s auto sleep/awake feature.  When you close the front flap the mini goes to sleep and when you open it the mini wakes up.

  • Nice review as always. I like the STM bags so this review intrigued me. However, I prefer the full-grained cowhide leather version lined in pigskin from Saddleback Leather Company. They just started marketing the iPad Mini case. Will you review that product as well?

I’ll see what I can do.

Is the magnet strong enough to keep the cover closed, or does it risk flapping open/moving enough to trigger the sleep/wake feature unintentionally?
