ONGUARD Magnum Case for the iPhone 5 Review

There are a few cases which I consider “maximum protection” cases.  Ones which offers the largest amount of protection for those individuals who are really, really hard on their phones.  Most of these cases have an integrated screen shield.  Not everyone is a fan of these built in screen shields as they can sometimes make it harder to use the iPhone’s touch screen.

The ONGUARD Magnum case does not have a screen shield built in but that still doesn’t stop me from adding it to my list of cases that might just save your phone should you drop it.  The Magnum case is beefy and beefy usually means it protective.  Let’s find out.

The ONGUARD Magnum Case for the iPhone 5 is available in 6 different colors.  You can choose from Gray, Black, Orange, White, Yellow or Pink.

Inside the packaging you’ll find just the case.  While ONGUARD doesn’t include a screen shield they do sell them.  I actually reviewed a set of them here.  You can browse through all of ONGUARD’s screen protectors here.

Here’s what ONGUARD has to say about the Magnum Case for the iPhone 5.

Onguard’s Magnum Case offers the toughest drop protection for your device. Its heavy duty multi-layered construction consists of a soft silicone layer topped by a hard polycarbonate cover, along with reinforced corners. These features combine to provide to a high degree of shock absorption that protects your device from the tumbles and fumbles of everyday life.

  • Heavy duty multi-layered construction offering ultimate drop protection
  • Combining a soft shock absorbing silicone layer with a durable polycarbonate cover
  • Rugged design with reinforced corners for shock absorption and port covers to shield from debris
  • Raised front edge for added screen protection
  • Available in 6 different color combinations: black/black, white/black, yellow/black, orange/black, gray/black, black/fuchsia

The case itself is a hybrid design which consists of two pieces.  A soft inner silicone layer which is mattee and a hard exterior plastic shell which offers a grippy finish.

To install the case place the soft layer on to your phone first then snap the plastic layer over it.

Once installed the case leaves full access to all of the iPhone 5′s ports and controls.

You’ll find built in port protectors on the bottom of the case which cover up the headset jack and lightning port.  This prevents dust and other debris from making its way inside these ports.

There is plenty of lay on the table protection thanks to the lip of the case which comes up on to the glass screen of the iPhone.  The black silicone of the case is a bit of a lint catcher.  If you’re someone who keeps their phone in their pocket you might find yourself brushing off the silicone layer often.

This case is highly protective.

Since the Magnum case has such a severely raised front lip there almost isn’t the need for a front screen shield.  The thick case, with it raised corners will hopefully save your phone should an unfortunate drop occur.  With protection comes size though and the Magnum case will never be one that’s described as thin.  If you’re okay with a little added bulk in exchange for a whole lot of protection you’ll want to check out the ONGUARD Magnum Case for the iPhone 5.
