The iRig Mic is a microphone made specifically for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It’s a super simple plug and play interface and works through various apps. For this review I played with Memo Recorder and GarageBand but it works with a multitude of other 3rd party apps as well as the IK Multimedia apps. So whats the real deal?
Read on to find out the details below!
First of all the price tag. The retail price at the Apple store where this unit was purchased is $59.95. I tried this mic while making a YouTube video and found the audio quality was just ok, but better than most built in camcorder mic’s. I did notice a slight hum and buzz but it wasn’t too obtrusive. Overall I’d say it is better than any camcorder microphone and can record decent audio.
The Mic works by plugging the 3.5 mm plug into the headphone jack. There are several apps out there for recording audio or you can use the IK Multimedia Apps created for the iRig. This is great for Garageband on the iPad/iPhone/iPod and even on the Mac. Fun for karaoke, recording instruments, performances, interviews, podcasting and like I mentioned making video directly on the iPhone or iPad.
So what’s the bottom line? Bottom line is if you’re looking to add a microphone when you’re on the go and want to use your portable device to capture audio I’d get it. If you are looking for a more professional setup I’d pass, but at $60 it’s a fun little toy!
