Digitimes is reporting that Taiwanese manufacturers have received initial orders from Apple for the next versions of their iOS portable devices – the iPhone 5 and iPad 3. Recent rumors peg the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 for an early to mid-September unveiling and shipping en masse sometime in October. The report also suggests that Apple will only be releasing one model of the iPhone 5.
I think a refreshed iPhone is a no-brainer. But a new iPad in October? I’m calling b.s. on that one. If it does prove to be true, there are going to be a lot of angry iPad 2 customers who are just hitting their stride with their new tablets. It’s still rare that I walk into my local Best Buy or Target and see iPad 2′s on the shelf. Releasing the iPad 3 only months after the iPad 2 went on sale seems utterly ridiculous to me. That said, I wouldn’t mind being wrong on this one. I’d love to see what Apple will cram into the next version of their industry-leading tablet. As for the iPhone 5? Just tell me when to get in line.
