The iPad 2: I Never Wanted One Until I Got One, Now I Can’t Live Without It

I’ll be honest, when the iPad was first announced back in January of 2010 I was one of the people who passed it off as being “a big iPod touch” and I decided I didn’t need nor want one. After the launch of the device I started to see more and more evidence of why it is actually so useful but still I wasn’t convinced I need one. Fast forward to 2011 when the iPad 2 was announced.  At that point I finally was ready to admit that it’s a great capable device and it’s definitely something I should get.

I finally got my iPad 2 from my parents as my 18th birthday/graduation gift and as soon as I started using it I was simply put, shocked. Not just by the hardware and operating system, but by the developers and all the amazing apps they’ve made for the bigger display. Before I used carry around my MacBook Pro with me to do whatever I needed to on the go, but now I leave it at home. With my iPad I can do something as simple as make a document or surf the web all the way to making my own songs and editing videos on a device that weighs close to nothing. I’ve never felt at any moment that I need to have my laptop for a certain task.

If you’re one of those people who is passing on an iPad because you think it’s just a bigger iPod touch or iPhone, don’t. It’s so much more than just that.  The bigger screen allows you to do so much more than you ever thought. You’ll be surprised at all the things you can do and I’ve even heard people say that the iPad has replaced their computer simply because they can do everything they need to do in a smaller, lighter, more portable package that is so easy to use.

I also dismissed the iPad as a just a big iPod Touch – a product that was just fine with me except for my increasing problem with reading text on a screen so small. Along with this problem was the fact that I was carrying my MacBook Pro wherever I went. I began to view it as “My Precious.” My Precious went everywhere I did, a problem since it contained my life. I needed a secondary computer, especially since I always have time on my hands every day that I travel to and from work on the NYC subway. I also needed a portable computer that could double as an ebook reader because, as a college professor, I was royally sick and tired of traveling around with 20lb textbooks every day. At age 50, carrying around textbooks along with everything else in my mobile office carrying case was just too much and I finally bought an iPad 2 about a month ago.

I have all the books and documents I need scanned and transferred into my iPad 2 and this the first semester in my 25 year career that I don’t need to carry a textbook made of paper. For that reason alone, I feel incredibly liberated.

It’s a device that’s more appropriate for my life than a MacBook Air, a device that I can’t use as discreetly as I can an iPad while reading as a ride in the subway system.

Because I needed it as a secondary computer to use at work, I bought the Apple wireless keyboard and am experimenting with different remote computer access apps so that I can access one needed software program from my MacBook Pro at home.

I love my iPad 2. It’s so much more than just a big iPod Touch.

I got the first iPad because I was amazed! It was when iPad 2 came out I couldn’t make up my mind if I needed it! Well, I finally decided to get it and I’m more amazed than ever! The iPad 2 has awesome graphics you notice the difference (from the original iPad) right away. I hardly ever use my laptop computer! I spend hours on my iPad 2 doing anything from Internet, music, movies, gaming and a host of other things. The iPad 2 is faster than it’s predecessor, it’s graphics are beautiful and crisp! I’m so extremely excited to have my iPad 2 and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next iPad 3! I’m positive I’ll be getting that one too! I give my older iPads away to people who never heard of them! Can you believe there are people who still don’t know about the iPad? It blows my mind! :) . By the way, I was never an Apple person until I bought my first iPod touch-I flipped immediately! I never go back! My heart belongs to Apple!

i actually have an ipod touch 4th gen etc etc and actually purchased 3 days a go an ipad 2 because i believed that it would be as useful as that device
    its not
i will never use the iPad

  • Anonymous

actually i bought it because i am too affluent
and find out that it does not have a user niche not already filled by my/our households other devices
that is an iPod touch, smart phone, lap tops
for me an ultra portable lap top, with moderate performance, for about the same cost would have been a better purchase

To larrywild, you may be affluent/”wealthy”, but your grammar doesn’t showing you as being all that smart. Also the iPad 2 can do away with all those other things that your so called affluence allows you to buy .

What a narrow minded comment. i candidly refer to affluence and teh mistakes affluence can lead you into, . Very pathetic comment by you to criticise a hastily typed bit of effluvia obn a web page and not notice ant redeeming quality in the theme of the statement. i do not wish to make an assesment of your pathology, yet I do not care if the iPad is the Swiss Army Knife of gadgets. Only the cognitively gifted can access its sublime secrets I suppose. Go forth and multiply you Onanist.
