One of the biggest selling features of the new iPad 2 is its smaller design. Why bulk it up with a thick case? A great option for retaining the out of the box form factor of your iPad 2 is combing a screen protector and a skin. The team at BodyGuardz agrees and one of their newest offerings is the Armor Carbon Fiber for the iPad 2. This carbon fiber looking back skin comes in both black and white and includes one of BodyGuardz antiglare ScreenGuardz screen shields as well. The duo works in-conjunction with the iPad 2 Smart Cover so you needn’t worry about having to give that up in exchange for a little protection.
How does the Armor Carbon Fiber perform? Read on for the full review.
The first step in the installation process is to install the screen shield. Okay, truth be told you can choose to install whichever piece first you see fit – the front or the back – I simply went with the front. The front piece consists of the BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Anti-Glare HD screen protector. The iPad can be somewhat difficult to view in direct sunlight. Choosing an anti-glare screen shields makes this a little easier. In addition anti-glare shields also cut out the amount of oily fingerprints which get attracted to the device’s glass screen.
The ScreenGuardz shield comes along with a small microfiber cloth which you use to clean the screen of your iPad 2 before installation. It’s imperative that you remove all of the dust from the screen of your iPad 2 before installing the shield. One tiny spec of dust means a bubble on your iPad 2′s beautiful screen – and no one wants that.
Installation the shield is done just like any other silicone adhesive based shield. You first remove the bottom layer. Then carefully position the shield in place, making sure to line up the cutouts for the home button and the iPad 2′s front facing camera. Then you proceed to push out any air bubbles that may have formed under the shield. When you’ve gotten the shield perfect you then remove the top protective layer.
What you’re left with is a perfectly installed, perfectly aligned shield on your iPad 2. My goal, when installing any screen shield, is to install it so that once on you can not tell it’s even there. I had no issues accomplishing this with the BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz. The shield went on easy and any bubbles that formed during the install were easily removed with a credit card.
The antiglare shield does slightly diminish the vibrant look of the iPad 2′s screen but that’s the trade off you make in exchange for a screen that’s easier to view in high light level conditions and one that doesn’t attract many fingerprints. I personally think this shield looks fabulous on the iPad 2.
The second half of the installation is the back portion. The carbon fiber skin comes in a choice of white or black. It’s made from a PVC based material that serves to protect the back of your iPad 2 from scratches. The skin comes rolled up in a tube which it a little awkward to work with – mostly when removing it from its backing. However once you remove it the skin lays flat and is easier to handle.
The install process for the back skin is similar to that of the front shield. Simply align the skin on to the back of the iPad 2 taking care to place it down in the proper orientation with off of the cutouts in place. Once you’re sure it’s straight you can press it down firmly with your hand and push out any air bubbles which may have formed.
If you make a mistake and find the back skin isn’t straight fear not. It’s easily removed and can then be repositioned and reinstalled. This is also helpful for when you want to switch things up and permanently remove the skin. It leaves no residue and can be safely taken off at any time.
The carbon fiber skin has the proper cutouts in place for the volume rocker, mute/orientation switch, camera lens and sleep/awake button. There’s also an optional removable cutout for the SIM card slot for iPad 2′s meant for GSM networks.
It also has similar cutouts for the iPad 2′s microphone and headset jack.
This set up adds virtually no bulk to the device and keeps it completely compatible with the Apple Smart Cover. You’ll still be able to use the Smart Cover in both the landscape mode or portrait mode depending on your task.
The cutouts also include the iPad 2′s speaker grill – so you’ll be able to hear your music and other sounds without interruption. The 30-pin dock connector also remains unobstructed so that there’s no issue when it comes time to charge or sync your iPad 2.
If you’re yearning for some stylish protection for your iPad 2 but want to retain an out of the box feel you’ll want to check out the BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber. BodyGuardz has teamed up a carbon fiber looking skin that’s easy to both install and remove along with a high-quality screen protector.
